According to estimates of W.H.O on Wednesday they will need almost 88,000 large cylinders of oxygen with 1 million new COVID-10 cases per week worldwide. Luckily in 2017, the Bill & Melinda gates, W.H.O, and UNICEF started searching for methods to increase oxygen supply to poor nations. This step was not taken in expectation of the pandemic. It was because oxygen is a lifesaver for many premature infants and pneumonia patients. The orders for equipment by these organizations began in January. However, within a few weeks, the suppliers were flooded due to increased demand in lieu of the pandemic.
So far, 14000 oxygen concentrators are being purchased by W.H.O. These concentrators filter oxygen from the air. This oxygen is to be sent to 120 nations. The purchase of more 170,000 concentrators is expected over the next 6 months. They will cost $100 million.
Inogen Oxygen concentrator as a solution:
There are two possible ways of oxygen delivery. One is a portable oxygen tank, which contains pure oxygen. It provides oxygen to the patient at high pressure through a mask tightly strapped around the mouth and nose. However, tanks are heavy and required to be refilled. The refilling is done at central stations because of its structure. And then the tanks are delivered through a truck. This process includes the risk of fire and explosion.
An alternate tank is an oxygen concentrator portable. It is equal to a suitcase in size. Under this process, oxygen is pulled out of air forcing it under pressure. It is done through a “molecular sieve” which is filled with mineral zeolite to absorb nitrogen.
One concentrator normally costs around $1000 to $2000. Moreover, it can produce around 90% pure oxygen.
