Oxygen Concentrator Found Helpful as Covid-19 Hits Poor Countries

At the beginning of the global pandemic, the main concern of wealthier countries was their lack of preparedness to deal with Covid-19 patients.  The developed nations bought up the huge supply of ventilators, masks, gowns, and other related supplies. Several Covid-19 patients need help with breathing at some point. Currently, the Covid-19 pandemic is spreading quickly across Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Among these regions of the world, the hospitals short of equipments. They lack of ventilators, oxygen machine, and other equipment necessary for a Covid-19 patient. Moreover, there is desperate need of a simple life-saving cure known as Oxygen. Oxygen providers are running short of it Oxygen.

Several critical Covid-19 patients fight with hypoxia. It is a condition of low blood oxygen levels. The only thing to cure this situation is pure oxygen in a huge amount. The prime minister of the UK, Boris Johnson, has given credit to the oxygen for saving his life. He received a lot of oxygen during his treatment. Moreover, oxygen is also helpful to treat other diseases such as pneumonia. It causes a huge number of deaths among children worldwide.

The continent Africa has less than 2000 functional ventilators in its all 41 countries. As per WHO, this quantity is greatly lesser than the ventilators available in the US which are around 170,000.

The increasing demand for oxygen has shown that the right to breath now depends upon money. Oxygen in many parts of the world is expensive and difficult to get. However, Europeans and North Americans treat it as their essential need. They directly deliver it to the bed of COVID-19 patients in the form of a liquid. It is deep that we are running short of a thing that can be pulled from the air.

The Efforts of W.H.O, UNICEF, and other Agencies:

The World Health Organization (W.H.O) is expected to rise around $250m. This amount would be used to increase the delivery of oxygen to the regions in need.  The African Union and the World Bank are funding for the cause. Moreover, donations are also being collected by a few medical charities.

According to estimates of W.H.O on Wednesday that they will need almost 88,000 large cylinders of oxygen with 1 million new COVID-10 cases per week worldwide. Luckily in 2017, the Bill & Melinda gates, W.H.O, and UNICEF started searching for the methods to increase oxygen supply to poor nations.  This step was not taken in expectation of the pandemic. It was because oxygen is a lifesaver for many premature infants and pneumonia patients.  The orders for equipment by these organizations began in January. However, within a few weeks, the suppliers were flooded due to increased demand in lieu of pandemic.

So far, 14000 oxygen concentrators are being purchased by W.H.O. These concentrators filter oxygen from the air. This oxygen is to be sent to 120 nations. The purchase of more 170,000 concentrators is expected over the next 6 months. They will cost $100 million.

O2 concentrator as a solution:

There are two possible ways of oxygen delivery. One is a portable oxygen tank, which contains pure oxygen. It provides oxygen to the patient at high pressure through a mask tightly strapped around the mouth and nose. However, tanks are heavy and required to be refilled. The refilling is done at central stations because of its structure.  And then the tanks are delivered through a truck. This process includes the risk of fire and explosion.

An alternate tank is an oxygen concentrator portable. It is equal to a suitcase in size. Under this process, oxygen is pulled out of air forcing it under pressure. It is done through a “molecular sieve” which is filled with mineral zeolite to absorb nitrogen.

One concentrator normally costs around $1000 to $2000. Moreover, it can produce around 90% pure oxygen.

W.H.O, UNICEF, and other agencies are trying their best to provide more oxygen supply to the deserving nations. These agencies are trying their best to help the world and its working because of their determination. As we know hard work is key to success, and they are just going in the same way.
